Referees

PDSA is always interested in encouraging adults and young adults to become soccer referees. Refereeing deepens a person's knowledge and understanding of soccer, as well as provides a way to contribute to the game. Refereeing is an excellent way for those who love soccer to stay involved with the game and get paid for it.

Refereeing presents an excellent opportunity for young teens to learn self-confidence, responsibility, and leadership.

Basic requirements

  • You must be at least 13 years old
  • You have some soccer knowledge
  • You must be physically able to referee

How to become a PDSA Referee?

If you want to become a game official, we have a simple process.

  1. Fill out this form to express interest in refereeing for PDSA.
  2. Wait for a message from our referee coordinator with further instructions.
  3. You must then fill out the referee code of conduct and referee intake form supplied by the referee coordinator.
  4. You will receive the referee curriculum and online course to learn the game's rules.
  5. You will receive in-person referee training.
  6. Once you have met the qualifications, you will be asked to sign up for Notch (our referee assignment and payment tool).
  7. Then, the referee scheduler will typically assign you to your first game with a mentor official.

How much and how are you paid as a PDSA official?

You will find we have very competitive rates with other leagues in town. We pay between $15-30 per game, depending on the age group and position assigned.

  • U6
  • Center $20
  • U8
  • Center $25
  • U10
  • Center $25
  • AR 1 & 2 $15
  • U12 - U18
  • Center $30
  • AR 1 & 2 $20

To receive payment, you must sign up for Notch, which will be paid via the Notch Pay system.

How do I learn of my assignments and communication with the referee coordinator?

Once you are an approved official, you will be added to the PDSA referee GroupMe chat, where all communications will take place.

All assignments will come from Notch, where you will receive email notifications. After you receive a notification, you must accept or decline all assigned games in a timely manner. Failure to do some may lead to a reassignment.

What equipment do I need?

We will supply you with a referee shirt, basic whistle, scorecard holder and cards, and line flags for assistant referees.

You should bring a timepiece with a timer (we do have basic stopwatches you can borrow), a water bottle, proper attire and footwear, and a writing utensil (we have pens available)
